The Anti-tobacco program seeks to eliminate tobacco-related disparities in the African American community. Specifically, TCDC supports youth coalitions who help to reduce tobacco use among young people, collaborates with property managers, tenants and organizations to eliminate secondhand smoke in Multi-Housing, and establishes Arizona Smokers Helpline or ASHLine referral sites on church campuses. On-going professional support and medication is offered through the Arizona Smokers Helpline.
Heart & Soul is a cardiovascular and lung disease prevention program that helps African Americans and other underserved populations manage their health versus their health managing them. This program targets homeless, teens, adults, seniors and families and focuses on physical activity, healthy eating, blood pressure screening and overall healthy lifestyles. Heart & Soul has joined the “Let’s Move” initiative and developed the “Heart & Soul AZ Challenge” to help families remain active and to promote healthy dietary habits.
Early Childhood Development (ECD) is a “Parent as Teacher” program that provides support services to parents of birth through 3rd grade children. ECD educates parents (including teen parents) on child development, behavior modification, health & safety, and effectively managing educational choices.
TCDC partners with Magellan Health Services to lower the occurrence of substance abuse and suicide among African-Americans. The program entails assessing the needs of the African-American community as it pertains to substance abuse and suicide, assessing the resources of the community, and bringing likeminded community members together to utilize local resources to foster awareness and prevention.
Season Generation Program is a series of information and educational forums designed to educate seniors on programs, services, and other resources available to assist them in supporting healthy lifestyles, forging interdependent relationships and addressing life needs. The ultimate goal of Season Generation Program is to provide access to existing resources for seniors that have been historically underutilized by the African American population in Phoenix Arizona.
